Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes. I grew up NOT knowing or enjoying sloppy Joes. Oh my goodness.

My mother’s cooking consisted plenty of Filipino and Americanized dishes (which I loved very much), so I really never knew what I was missing until I later discovered them myself on Food Network. My childhood days might have missed out of these messy concoctions, but whenever I want to feel that nostalgic little kiddo feeling I make a batch of sloppy Joes. More importantly, they are easy to prepare for a weekday dinner when you are running low on time and want to curl up on your couch and catch up on TV time.

I’ve strictly made Ellie Krieger’s version using ground turkey and not ground beef, and I was hesitant to try it otherwise. Why mess with a good thing, but a little variety in your life doesn’t hurt right? Mmmm….baby, this version is absolutely scrumptious in every way. I absolutely loved the bright hints of orange zest and it melds beautifully with ground beef. The Worcestershire sauce adds a layer of zing that is offset with the sweet touch of molasses combined with the lightly caramelized onions and garlic. It’s one delicious mess that you will fall in love with. I paired it with oven baked French fries with ketchup and sriracha and tropical iced tea. Sriracha is my fave hot sauce and you need just a touch of it for a fiery sweet bite, it’s totally optional. Classic comfort food at it’s best.

Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef½ cup onion, chopped2 to 3 garlic cloves, minced1 (8 ounce) can of Tomato sauce¼ cup ketchup1 teaspoon molasses4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce1 teaspoon sriracha sauce    ½ teaspoon ground mustard1 teaspoon dijon mustardpinch of cayenne pepperpinch of ground cloves1 teaspoon salt½ teaspoon pepper2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil1 teaspoon orange zest

6 whole wheat buns, split

Preparation:

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the extra-virgin olive oil and cook the beef, onion and garlic until the meat is no longer pink; drain the excess water.

Add in the tomato sauce, ketchup, sriracha, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, dijon mustard, ground mustard, cloves, cayenne pepper and orange zest. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer uncovered for 5 minutes.

Serve on whole wheat buns.
